Discover Xami Sushi

Walking into Xami Sushi for the first time felt like discovering a neighborhood secret that locals quietly protect. Tucked along 2707 E Broadway Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85040, United States, the diner-style sushi spot doesn’t rely on flashy décor. Instead, it leans on something far more important: consistently good food and a welcoming, no-pressure vibe that makes you want to stay longer than planned.

On my most recent visit, I watched a steady mix of regulars and first-timers scanning the menu, which is refreshingly easy to navigate. You’ll find the expected sushi rolls, nigiri, and sashimi, but also warm kitchen items that make the place approachable even if raw fish isn’t your usual go-to. I ordered a classic California roll alongside a spicy tuna roll, mainly because they’re reliable benchmarks. Both arrived quickly, neatly plated, and noticeably fresh. The rice was seasoned just right-not overly sweet-and the fish had that clean flavor you only get when ingredients are handled properly.

What stood out most was how the kitchen operates. You can see the chefs working methodically, wiping down surfaces between orders and handling fish with care. According to guidelines from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, proper temperature control and sanitation are critical for serving raw seafood safely, and Xami Sushi clearly takes that seriously. That attention to process shows up in the final bite. There’s no fishy aftertaste, which is often the first sign of quality in sushi preparation.

I’ve eaten sushi across Phoenix, from upscale restaurants to quick grab-and-go spots, and this place sits comfortably in the middle. It doesn’t pretend to be fine dining, yet it delivers a level of consistency that many higher-priced locations struggle to maintain. A friend of mine, who worked in restaurant management for years, joined me on one visit and pointed out how efficiently the staff handles peak hours. Orders stay accurate, tables turn smoothly, and the service never feels rushed.

Reviews from other diners echo that experience. Many mention the friendly staff and the fact that the menu offers something for everyone, including cooked rolls, tempura, and simple noodle dishes. That variety matters, especially in a diner-style setting where groups often have mixed preferences. One online review described it as a place you can bring sushi skeptics without worrying they’ll leave hungry, which feels spot on.

From an expertise standpoint, the quality aligns with what organizations like the James Beard Foundation often highlight when discussing great food experiences: respect for ingredients and consistency over gimmicks. While Xami Sushi isn’t chasing awards, it follows the same core principles-fresh sourcing, straightforward preparation, and flavors that don’t try to hide behind heavy sauces.

There are limitations worth noting. The space is modest, so during busy dinner hours, seating can be tight. Also, if you’re looking for experimental fusion rolls or omakase-style dining, this isn’t that kind of place. But for reliable sushi, fair pricing, and a relaxed atmosphere, it delivers exactly what it promises.

Every time I leave, I notice how many customers stop to chat with the staff before heading out. That kind of loyalty doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built through everyday experiences-solid meals, clean preparation, and a sense that the people behind the counter genuinely care about what they’re serving.

  • This has to be the best sushi place in town. The staff is great, and Miguel—the owner, I believe—is extremely knowledgeable about the craft. If you’ve ever read my other reviews, you know I say what’s on my mind and I’m not politically correct about it. For context, I’ve lived in Asia for over three years, including six months in Osaka, Japan. I grew up traveling and tasting food from all over the world. With that background, I can honestly say this place surprised me. The fish smelled fresh, as if it came straight from the ocean yesterday. The sashimi melts in your mouth, the rice is prepared beautifully, and the overall quality is something you rarely find here. If you truly appreciate good sushi, you’ll love this place. But fair warning: if your idea of “high-end sushi” is something from Fry’s or you think Lin’s Buffet is top-tier, this place probably isn’t for you. I wish them success!

  • Wow! Everything was good. I should have taken pics before we dove in. Viva Las Vegas roll was delicious. The jalapeno poppers were premise prepared and like nothing we'd ever tasted before. The pepper was raw, warm cream cheese mix. Spicy edemame. A good time and good food.

  • While a little difficult to get to, Xami Sushi has been delicious each time. Their prices are very fair, especially reasonable during lunch. The staff are friendly, the portions are big, and the food is so so so good! I highly recommend this place as your new lunch spot if you're nearby!

  • I was in Phoenix 3 nights. I went here the first night and was blown away. In all sincerity I would have come back every night but forced myself to try something different the second night. The 3rd night was also great. Miguel and his staff are great. The food was fresh and awesome. The calamari is the best I have ever had. Sushi was great as well and this is the first time I have a combo which every piece was unique. Well done and I will definitely be back.

  • We live in the area and went here when he first opened, then it was good..nice to see a sushi restaurant in the area. We went back tonight and it was fantastic. The calamari was outstanding!! Best I ever had, and I’m from an eastern costal state. I also recommend the spicy crispy tuna! Although, I don’t think you could go wrong here with any item, these really were awesome. No photos, we ate it

  • Gems are rare but can be found anywhere. I stumbled upon this spot on my way to the airport and hit the jackpot! The amount of reviews and their ratings speak for themselves. Miguel has got it going on with his local roots and food focused attitude, he serving first rate fish. It helps to be around the corner from his fish supplier . Seriously good vibes built upon Miguel’s passion for his craft, the sushi is about the fish here. Loved every bite. PS. I ate for 2 people because the food was so good and the conversation was great.
